High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay has dismissed the likelihood of such an incident, which would mark a diplomatic setback for the United Nations and the White House, which has sought to soothe U.S. relations with the Muslim world. Israeli lobby groups are urging the United States and European Union to stay away entirely to avoid risking the embarrassment of having to leave the meeting. “It would really not look good,” said Gerald Steinberg, head of the Jerusalem-based group NGO Monitor, who said a breakdown in Geneva could sour efforts to broker Middle East peace through other channels, such as Syria-Israeli talks.”
