"Ford Foundation is Criticized on Mideast Funding"

Three years after the Ford Foundations grants to anti-Israel groups prompted a furor in Congress, the $10 billion New York-based philanthropy is at it again, according to a report by the NGO Monitor, an Israel-based organization overseen by Israels former ambassador to the United Nations, Dore Gold...

Exchange of correspondence with Iain Levine of Human Rights Watch regarding Gerald M. Steinberg, "Human-Rights Schizophrenia: Human Rights Watch shows a disturbing disparity in its treatment of Israel and China," National Review Online

Kenneth Roth, the longtime head of Human Rights Watch, published a powerful piece on China coinciding with President Hus recent visit to the U.S. It was an eloquent defense of the need to press China to implement basic human rights, and it was evidence that HRW, when it is not influenced by personal political agendas, can be an effective advocate of human rights. Unfortunately, when it comes to Israel, this has not been the case...

Target Ford

On October 16, 2003, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, a New York-based wire service that serves Jewish newspapers worldwide, launched a scorching four-part series on the Ford Foundation. Written by investigative reporter Edwin Black, the series, "Funding Hate," alleged that Ford had provided financial support to several Palestinian nongovernmental organizations accused of anti-Zionist and anti-Semitic behavior at the United Nations World Conference against Racism in Durban, South Africa, in late summer 2001. A Ford spokesman denied the thrust of Black's allegations: "We have seen no indication that our grantees in Durban or elsewhere engaged in anti-Semitic speech or activities."...

"Palestinian Seeking U.S. Entry Says Israelis Are War Criminals"

Tourani's Gaza-based Palestinian Center for Human Rights "is one of the few organizations that issue condemnations of Palestinian institutions," said the Israeli-based director of NGO Monitor, Gerald Steinberg. But Mr. Steinberg, who specializes in detecting anti-Israeli bias among NGOs and human rights organizations, added that there is another side to Mr. Tourani. His anti-Israeli activities allow his organization to continue operating under Palestinian Arab Gaza authorities. Mr. Tourani is mostly prominent in a "campaign to harass IDF officers," Mr. Steinberg said.

Exchange of correspondence with Reuters AlertNet, regarding the biased activities and agendas of its NGO members and "Content Partners"

NGO Monitor identified Reuters AlertNet as a major media outlet for highly politicized NGOs that promote the 2001 Durban strategy directed against Israel, including, in some cases, divestment and boycott campaigns. NGO Monitor requested information from AlertNet regarding the criteria by which three hundred "contributing organizations" and other NGO "content partners" are accepted and also asked that NGO Monitor analyses of these organizations be published on the AltertNet site. These NGOs, (some of which are highly politicized and biased), provide information on humanitarian needs and background to the conflict, shaping the way relief organizations and the media approach the subject. Megan Rowling of Reuters Alertnet rejected NGO Monitors request, stating that "the political arena in which you/we operate is very sensitive," She failed to acknowledge that this political arena is identical for the NGOs whose reports and activities are publicized, resulting in a glaringly biased publication. Editor Mark H. Jones, then argued that NGO Monitor does not fulfill logistical criteria for content partnership. The correspondence continues.

"Israelis Want AIPAC Bill Softened"

The Palestinian Anti-Terrorism Act of 2006 would ban all non-humanitarian American assistance to the Palestinian Authority and prohibits official American contacts with the P.A. unless Hamas recognizes Israel and renounces terrorism. The article also discusses the potential impact on NGO funding.

"Charity Money Often Used for Politics"

With Israel calling on the international community to cease funding the Palestinian Authority in the wake of its takeover by Hamas, foreign governments and philanthropic organizations are discussing alternative means of aiding humanitarian efforts throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip...
