EIDHR: Additional European Funding for Mideast Conflict Groups March 16, 2010
In 2009, the European Commission allocated €2,007,051 through the European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR) for Israeli and Palestinian NGOs. Highly politicized Israeli NGOs include ICAHD, Machsom Watch, Adalah, ACRI, and Yesh Din. Some grantees use rhetoric that demonizes Israel, including “apartheid” and “war crimes.” 2008 EIDHR recipients included B’Tselem, Breaking the Silence, Gisha, HaMoked, and PHR-I. The EC claims to have evaluations of NGO funding, but these are not made available. more »

B´Tselem
Following last year’s Gaza war, B’Tselem gave out video cameras to “young volunteers” to document their everyday lives in Gaza. The results were publicized in the New York Times and YNet. B’Tselem’s video project may have constructive elements. But, the absence of images of the effects of Hamas rocket attacks on Israeli victims emphasizes B’Tselem’s role in the politicization of human rights in the Arab-Israeli conflict. more »

NGOs claimed Nizar Rayan was a civilian
Nizar Rayan, a senior Hamas military commander, and members of his family were killed in an IDF airstrike on January 1, 2009. PCHR called it a “heinous crime” and listed Rayan as a “civilian” in its casualty figures for the Gaza War. B’Tselem claimed “it is hard to think of a definite military advantage that could have been achieved” by the strike. more »
