  • Composed of 53 state members elected by the UN, the UNCHR meets annually in regular session in March/April for six weeks in Geneva. Over 3,000 delegates from member and observer States and from non-governmental organizations participate.
  • Member states for 2004 include: Egypt, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sierra Leone, Sudan and Zimbabwe.
  • During its regular annual session, the Commission adopts about a hundred resolutions, decisions and Chairperson’s statements on matters perceived to be relevant.
  • Commission on Human Rights procedures and mechanisms are mandated to examine, monitor and publicly report either on human rights situations in specific countries or territories or on major phenomena of human rights violations worldwide.
  • The UNCHR was a primary vehicle for the 2001 Durban Conference that provided a central platform for demonization of Israel and anti-Semitism.
